Shieh and Shipler...damn them
I am really beginning to hate both my Political Issues professor and the author of The Working Poor, David Shipler.
Reading this book is like...doing something terribly painful to myself over and over again. You can fill in the blanks, combining rusty nails with eyes and steel toed boots with spleens. Every chapter Shipler just tells me about some poor people. Ok, great. Now Mr. Shipler, I would love for you to make a point. What makes you so special, Mr. Shipler? I spent $14.00 on your book. Do you know what that means? Every person who bought this book paid you money to tell them about the poor. I could just walk through New York and learn about the poor for free. I hope you're donating all of this money to charity or something, otherwise I shall hate you even more.

Now for Mr. Shieh. We have to write a journal entry for every chapter we read. Well, 10 entries anyway. 500 words each. That means for each chapter about the same thing, a poor person, I have to come up with 500 words. 500 words about the poor, about my feelings, about my ideology, about nothing. This is killing me. I ran out of words on entry #2.
And the paper that he handed out as an assignment, I will provide you with some direct quotes from.
"...about Shipley’s book..."
"...most of Shipley’s book..."
"...used in Shipley’s book..."
"...what Shipley is trying to say ..."
You may have noticed I called him Mr. David Shipler. You may be wondering why. Well Professor, his name is Shipler, not Shipley.
Moving on.
"Good clear writing will be rewarded; spelling and grammatical mistakes will be result in a lower grade."
Brilliant.
Followed immediately after by:
"Below are a list of topics that you MUST address at least once in your journal entries."
Also Brilliant.
I no longer like this class. It has been elevated to loathe.

Glad I'm not the only one. This book is sucking my will to live. It's even convincing me, the more I read it, that the poor DESERVE to be poor, at least the ones Shipler chose for his "case studies".

Long ago, I discovered that a great many Literature professors weren't actually interested in fostering students capable of creating great literature, they were merely enticed by the idea of creating a class full of echo chambers.

Sadly, I've since discovered that it's more than just Lit. profs.

So one goes on to discover the joys of the alternate education process, the one where you attempt to perform experiments in psychology on your professor so as to determine what he will reward and what he will find the most excruciating without bringing punishment. This talent will be greatly rewarded in the real world when you have to deal with a boss possessing the same sort of procto-ocular abilities.
